5 Quick Tips to Jump Start Your Day

Jump-Start Your Day

I’ll be the first to admit I am not a morning person. At all.

My family will attest. Any of my friends who have ever seen me in the morning can verify this. And probably all the cars who pass me on the road on the way to school could testify that I do not have the facial expressions of a morning person.

Believe it or not, I actually like the idea of mornings; I love sunrises, I love the mist that hovers above the dewy grass and I LOVE the silence before the house wakes. But it’s the act of actually getting out of bed early that I cannot quite master.

That being said, I have learned some tried and true things that help me function when I need to get my day going.

Here are my top five favorite things:

Jump Start Your Day Tip #1

Drink a Glass of Water

This might sound trivial but do not underestimate the amazing benefits of drinking water. I always take a water bottle to bed with me and in the morning, before I even get out of bed, I try to finish whatever is left. That usually averages about 10 ounces. It’s amazing what those few ounces can do for my energy!

Not to mention its other health benefits such as aiding in digestion, fast-tracking your water intake, and getting your body jump-started for the day.

I know coffee is the go-to beverage of choice when it comes to waking up, but drinking a glass of water is just as effective as coffee. No, I’m serious. Try it. Most mornings when I get my water in first thing, I don’t need coffee.

If drinking plain water is hard for you, try adding a scoop of Boost. Since adding this immune-booster to our water every day, we have no problem getting our water in. (My kids can’t get enough of this stuff!) It really does taste great and I feel great all day long, too. Use code: KimberlyM10 for 10% off your order!

Looking for a good water bottle? I prefer glass bottles with flip-top lids like this one: Zulu Atlas Glass Water Bottle with Flip Lid, Purple, 20 oz

Make Your Bed

If you grew up with a mom like mine, you were probably made to make your bed before coming down to breakfast. I found it a little annoying when I was younger but that routine became hard-grained into me until I just could not start my day without it being done.

There is just something about starting your day with a made bed that gets your brain into the mode of accomplishing things. When I don’t get around to making it for one reason or another, my whole day feels off.

But it’s also nice to have one room in the house already straightened up and “ready to go” for the day. (If your bedroom is not an easy cleaning job, check out this post for some great tips to get your bedroom in gear!)

Jump Start Your Day Tip #3

Exercise

I’m not referring to a full workout, although those are ideal. A couple of minutes a day are all it takes to get your heart pumping and your blood flowing. It’s crazy effective and boosts your energy within minutes. If you can just get to that initial start, you’ll be good to go for the whole workout and the rest of the day.

There are plenty of apps out there that offer a short workout with effective results. Jumping jacks, running in place, anything will work, you just want to get your body moving.

If you prefer a more intense workout, this one is by far my favorite: Jillian Michaels – 30 Day Shred. Only 20 mins a day and I saw results faster with this program than with any others I’ve tried. Love this one!

But my favorite, low-impact workout right now is a barre workout. If you haven’t tried a barre workout before, you’re missing out. But don’t let it fool you, it may be low-impact but it has some incredible strength training involved. I love it!

One last thing, if you have littles at home, I know how hard it can be to work out. Constant interruptions when you’re trying to focus on breathing are not ideal. I know many moms who involve their kids in their workouts, but if that’s not easy for you, download some free coloring pages and let them color while you work out. They’re expressing creativity and you’re getting in your exercise.

Jump Start Your Day Tip #4

Get Dressed

Just like making the bed, getting dressed triggers your mind into thinking it’s time to start your day.

Growing up, most of my schooling was done at home but my mom never let us stay in our pajamas. That was frustrating to us girls but even we couldn’t deny that more was accomplished when we were dressed and ready for our day than if we stayed in comfy clothes.

If you are the type that has to do your hair, make-up, etc, in order to feel truly put together, then go for it. But if the only thing you accomplish is getting dressed, good for you! (Don’t forget shoes, that addition really does make a difference.)

Eat a Good Breakfast

As much as I am not a morning person, I am not a breakfast person, either.

Unless I have been up for at least an hour. I have to be fully awake for my stomach to register it’s hungry.

But I do know that putting good food into our bodies at the start of the day is quite literally providing us with the fuel we need.

So I have been working on getting better at this. Meal planning breakfasts have been a game-changer for me. If all I have to do is heat something up, I will most likely eat it, as opposed to having to prepare and cook it first. (I realize how incredibly lazy that sounds, but there it is.)

Or having food prepared and ready to throw together into a skillet, usually works, too.

One of my favorite breakfasts to make is over easy eggs over fried potatoes. (I know, I know…carbs) But peeling and cutting potatoes first thing in the morning is not exactly my cup of tea so I find buying frozen potatoes a better option. It might be a bit pricier, but it helps motivate me to make breakfast. the trade-off is worth it to me.

OK, that is all I have for you. I wanted to keep this one short and sweet but I hope it provided you with something to implement. I’d love to hear if these were helpful or if you have other tips you use to get your day going. Add them below and remember baby steps! (Especially if you are not a morning person like me!) 🙂
