Print Smarter, Not Harder: Save Big Bucks with Instant Ink!

May 28, 20245 min read

Growing up, cheap printing meant everything was in black and white. My parents reserved color pages for special occasions, which rarely included anything us kids wanted to print.

As much as I hated printing everything in black and white, things did not change much when I moved out of the house. I understood that color cartridges were crazy expensive and our hard-earned money was better spent elsewhere.

Many years later, I opened a Printables shop. Since I needed to print my designs to test them, I had to find a better solution.

Enter HP Instant Ink!

Not long after, I came across another shop owner who shared her secret to cheaply printing in color: Instant Ink.

According to her, she could print as many pages as she wanted—in color—without worrying about running out of ink. It sounded too good to be true, but I was intrigued and decided to see what all the hype was about.

Turns out, this HP Instant Ink plan was not only every bit as amazing as this woman said it was, it was BETTER!

What is Instant Ink?

Instant Ink is a program that allows you to print quality pages from your printer without ever having to go out and buy ink cartridges. Whether you're printing black and white, color or photo prints, you pay the same.

You sign up with Instant Ink, they send you ink cartridges and will continue to do so for as long as you’re a member. You only pay for the pages you print and they keep track of when your cartridges are running low and send you replacement ink well before you need it.

You just choose the plan that fits your printing needs and if you don't use all your allotted pages, they rollover to the next month. If you go over, no big deal, you pay a dollar per ten pages you go over.

Instant Ink Plans

You will need an HP account and a printer with WiFi capabilities. This allows them to keep track of your cartridge levels and the number of pages you print. If you don't have money for a printer right now, they do offer an all-in-one plan that allows you to pay a few extra dollars a month for a new printer with the option of upgrading every two years.

What I LOVE most about this plan is, I can choose one that meets my printing needs and if I don’t print all the allotted pages, they roll over to the following month.

Also, I found out rather quickly that I chose a plan much too small for us.

It wasn’t long before I got an email from Instant Ink letting me know I was close to my limit. But they suggested that I could upgrade if I had more printing projects coming up.

Doing the math, I saw that upgrading was much cheaper than paying the “10 pages for $1” charge since I knew I would print more before my month was up.

Since signing on with Instant Ink, I have upgraded twice, but I can always go back to a lower plan if I need to. I LOVE that flexibility!

Am I saving money with a monthly subscription?

If you only replace your ink cartridges once a year, then the subscription might not be for you. But if, like me, you replace your cartridges more than twice a year, then yes, you're saving money.

Let me walk you through how the subscription works...

Let's say you choose their most popular plan of 50 pages a month for $4.99, they will then send you ink cartridges for your specific printer (Shipping is free, btw) and an envelope to send back your old cartridges for recycling. Once you install your new cartridges and have your printer connected, your monthly plan begins.

I have been a member for five years now and I can honestly say I'm very happy to not have to worry about this aspect of my business. I never run out of ink and I could even sign up for paper delivery, too, if I wanted. They make running a printable business so easy!

Instant Ink makes being a customer SO easy!

In a very easy-to-understand dashboard, you can see how many pages you have printed and how many you have in Rollover Pages. You can also keep track of what monthly plan you are on and when you will be charged each month.

To see how much money I save, based on Instant Ink’s most popular plan, here are some stats:

The cheapest ink cartridges I have found new on Amazon are for $35. According to the listing, it should yield 100 colored pages.

Printing 100 colored pages at Staples would run me $70, plus shipping.

With Instant Ink, I pay only $6 per 100 pages (based on one year with Instant Ink which allows me a total of 600 pages for $60). And I never have to go to the store or order more cartridges; they're ready when I need them.

Do you see why Instant Ink is vital to my business? If you print anything at home, this is an absolute no-brainer. And the savings are even better the bigger your plan is!

Try them out for one month free!

If you're on the fence, try them out. Use this link to get your first month for free.

If after your month is over and you find you just don’t need Instant Ink, cancel your plan, it's as easy as that. You have nothing to lose and an amazing new partnership of cheap printing to gain!
