Do Natural Deodorants Really Work?

Three natural deodorant brands that really work!

If there is one thing I have found, it’s that natural deodorants do not work as well as conventional ones. They are also more expensive. But when Dementia began taking the lives of my great aunts and the memories of my Grandma, I knew I had to make a change.

If you did not know, aluminum is the active ingredient used in conventional deodorants to protect against perspiration. But it is also a known neurotoxin linked to breast cancer and Dementia.

Not only do I wish to prevent my daughters and myself from the horrible disease that has already taken so much from our family, I also do not want any of us applying something so dangerous onto our biggest organ: our skin. Applying traces of aluminum so close to our breasts when studies have suggested a link to cancer was something I could no longer, in good conscience, do.

The desire to rid us of harmful products sent me on the hunt for a natural deodorant that works. After trying several brands, I’ve found three that not only work but I love using.

PiperWai Natural Deodorant was the first one I found to really work. I heard about it on Shark Tank and ordered one that night. It comes in a 2 oz glass jar, which I thought was a little small originally, but it lasted a good two to three months.

It took a bit to get used to since I’ve never applied a cream deodorant before but I found adding a drop of water helps spread it easier. They have just released a stick version of their deodorant if you prefer that to the cream one.

From the first use, I loved the smell and loved that it actually worked. Ha! I did find, however, on days when I would be outside a lot, it was better to apply more for better protection.

The ingredient list also put my mind at ease, especially with the many essential oils it included. (I love essential oils so that was a plus in my book!)

Overall, this was a great find and one I still buy for one of my daughters who has an irritation to baking soda and cannot use the other brands that include it in their formulas.

Schmidt’s just came out with a natural deodorant line and it was cheaper than Piper Wai, so I decided to give it a go. Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant – Charcoal + Magnesium was the first one I tried and was in love from the first day! I would even go so far as to say I liked the protection better than Piper Wai’s.

The only cons I found compared to Piper Wai was it has baking soda which can cause irritation and it does not contain any essential oils. But it does smell good and it does what it says. It is also cheaper than Piper Wai by a few dollars.

Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant has many scented formulas to choose from. The scented ones are slightly cheaper than their charcoal formula and I think that is because, without the charcoal, the protection is not as great. Don’t get me wrong, they are still great products and they smell nicer than the charcoal, but I prefer the stronger protection the charcoal formula provides.

That being said, I can’t wait to try their Coconut Pineapple formula Schmidt’s just released in time for summer!

If you prefer a scented one, you can do what I do and use the scented ones for every day use and the magnesium one for days when you know you will need better protection.

Smarty Pitts was introduced to me just this week by a friend. I had never heard of the company before (Handcrafted Honey Bee) so I looked them up. They have an incredible website full of all kinds of goodies, blog posts, and a variety of products that I am eager to try out for myself. I felt right at home there.

I tried their deodorant on one of the hottest days we’ve had this summer and was impressed with how well it held up. After being outside for most of the day it worked great but not as long as Piper Wai or Schmidt’s Charcoal one. I found Smarty Pitts works perfect for my girls, especially since they provide their formulas with or without baking soda.

I also love how they offer mini versions of their deodorants for you to try before committing to a full size. Their full-sizes are slightly pricier than Schmidt’s but still less than Piper Wai.

Don’t forget to visit their website for other great products; you can check them out by clicking on this link and receive 15% off your first purchase.

  • When you switch to natural deodorant, give yourself several days for your underarms to detox from all the chemicals of your previous deodorant before deciding whether that brand works for you.
  • Sometimes natural deodorants can be stiffer than conventional ones; just add a drop or two of water or alcohol before applying to help it go on smoother.
  • Try a sample before committing to a full-size purchase if you are worried you might not like it.

I hope this review helps you navigate through the world of natural deodorants or encourages you to start on the path to a healthier you. Remember, when it comes to being healthy, sometimes baby steps are all you can do. Changing to a natural deodorant without harmful products is a great place to start!
